Anyone interested in the Guatemala Presidential election runoff on Sunday, August 11. I have some interest since our church has done mission trips to an orphanage there. I haven't gone myself yet.
The Presidential race is between former first lady Sandra Torres and Alejandro Giamattei who is a former director of the Guatemalan penitentiary system. Current President Jimmy Morales is not eligible to run for re-election. Sandra Torres got the most votes in the first 2019 election. Torres is considered left of center, but that is by Central American standards. She is pro-life and against government recognized same sex marriage. Giamattei is running as a law and order candidate who supports bringing back the death penalty. Guatemala has problems with high unemployment, gang violence, and corruption in government.
