“Why Have the Law?”

“The Law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.” Psalms 19:7

By Riley J. Hood

Charles H. Spurgeon said, “Lower the Law and you dim the light by which man perceives his guilt; this is a very serious loss to the sinner rather than a gain; for it lessens the likelihood of his conversion. I say you have deprived the gospel of its ablest auxiliary when you have set aside the Law. You have taken away from it the schoolmaster that is to bring men to Christ.” There are several purposes for the Law.  It shows men their sin, and need of Christ Jesus. “But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.” Romans 7:13 “Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.” Galatians 3:24 God gave His Law to Moses 1400 years before God sent His Son.  Salvation starts with the Law, we are saved from sin, as opposed to continuing in sin.

Law exists to punish the lawless. “Knowing this; that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient,” I Timothy 1:9. “A wise king scattereth the wicked, and bringeth the wheel over them.” Proverbs 20:26 The Law, can only properly punish malefactors after a crime has occurred. “Prevention” has the bad attribute of punishing the innocent, and the citizenry as a whole.

The Law restrains wicked men through fear of punishment. “Smite a scorner, and the simple will beware:” Proverbs 19:25 Alexander Hamilton wrote, “The hope of impunity is a strong incitement to sedition; the dread of punishment, a proportionately strong discouragement to it.”(Federalist No. 27)

The Milwaukee County Constitution Party is a Bible-based, political party, meaning our laws should be patterned after God's law found in the Bible. Our CPOW Party Constitution, Article II- Section A. reads, “To glorify God through continued trust in Him to use this organization and its members to restore the Biblical principles of government established by our Founding Fathers.”Our CPOW PlatformPreamble declares, “Our republic is a nation governed by a Constitution, which is rooted in Biblical law, administered by representatives who are constitutionally elected by the citizens.” Sir William Blackstone wrote, “The doctrines thus delivered we call the revealed or divine law, and they are to be found only in the Holy Scriptures.  Upon these two foundations, the law of nature and the law of revelation; depend all human laws; that is to say, no human laws should be suffered to contradict these.”

We mean to have our laws passed by the Legislature, enforced by an Executive and tried by Courts; but those laws will reflect God's law. Many sins are listed in the Bible, some sins have civil penalties, and are thus crimes. What the Bible punishes as crime, we ought to punish as crime, such as abortion, homosexuality, and adultery. Malefactors won't be charged with Bible verses; they will be charged with violating State Law.

Many a reprobate today, when confronted with God’s law, says, “But the government says it is okay.”  We mean to bring this situation to an end. Punishing evil is a statement of what good government ought to be. Just because a man is lost, he has no license to sin.  It is the “job” of the lost to repent, not to commit crimes with impunity, while the innocent suffer. “They that forsake the law praise the wicked: but such as keep the law, contend with them.” Proverbs 28:4 We will contend with the wicked not only in our communications, but in running righteous men; challenging the wicked for their posts.
