iPad and iPhone are two among of the most significant products manufactured by Apple. Although they run on the same mobile operating system called iOS, the two gadgets have various differences which have been the main deciding factors when consumers have to choose between the two. In this paper, the two gadgets: phone and tablet are compared in terms of their price, functionality, and differences in the support offered by the manufacturer on both gadgets. It should be noted, however, that both gadgets are almost similar versions of one another with a few core differences separating them.

In terms of price, the cheapest of the latest models of iPad is the iPad mini 4 which retails at $269 for the basic Wi-Fi model with 16 gigabytes of storage. The 12.9 inch iPad Pro with 256 gigabytes of memory retails for $1,099. On the other hand, the cheapest model among the most recent iPhones is the iPhone SE which retails at $400. The most expensive iPhone model is the iPhone 6s Plus with 128 gigabytes of memory retails at $949. Both gadgets are quite pricey, but iPhone is the most expensive one given the same memory as iPad.

In terms of functionality, iPad and iPhone have different functions when it comes to some cores tasks. First of all, iPhone has calling capabilities which means it does not require to be linked or tethered to anything before making a call. The iPad does not have such capabilities unless tethered or connected to an iPhone. Also, sending messages without the iMessage service is possible on an iPad only which has been linked to an iPhone. The rest of the functions, however, are similar for both gadgets. iPad, however, enjoys the real estate enabled by its relatively bigger screen compared to iPhone. The maximum screen size for iPhone is 5.5 inches while iPads go as high as 12.9 inches. iPads, therefore, can be used to perform many tasks especially office work and, thus, offer the users more functionality compared to iPhones.

The average lifespan of an iPad in terms of the support offered by the manufacturer is five years. An iPad released in 2011 still runs the latest software as updated by Apple. On the other hand, iPhones have in average three years. This aspect means that one has to change his/her iPhone every three years if at all they expect to run the latest software. In this way, iPad is the better choice given as it lasts longer than iPhone does in terms of software support. However, this aspect does not mean that an iPhone or an iPad not running the very latest software looses functionality. The latest software only improves on the capabilities of the gadgets and the levels of security offered.

To summerize, the comparison of iPads and iPhones has led to the conclusion that they are simply different versions of the same gadget. It all depends on what the user wants to use them for. If one wants to have a small gadget for communication purposes, he/she can have the iPhone. If one want a gadget to perform mostly productive functions, the iPad is the right choice. However, the iPhone's capabilities exceed those of the iPad, even though it comes at a higher price. The bigger iPad screen has been recently rendered almost irrelevant by the large iPhone Plus series screens which are only a couple of inches smaller than the iPad mini.
