Definition of slip fracture

This kind of crack is a crescent-shaped crack, or U-shaped crack, formed on the road surface along the driving direction, under the action of the sudden increase of horizontal force produced when the vehicle brakes, turns or accelerates. The tip of the U-shape usually points in the direction of the force. Slip cracks most often occur at braking, turning or accelerating positions.

When the slip crack is caused by the brake, the end of the slip crack (the top of the U-shaped) points to the driving direction. If the slip crack is caused by the acceleration of the vehicle, the end of the crack points to the rear of the vehicle.

Causes of slip cracks
