IEEE Referencing: A Complete Guide

To clarify your concepts, you may even get help from the writing services such as write my essay if you are unable to correctly cite a source within the text.

You do not need any special knowledge to cite references in a paper, and you certainly can use an essay writing service to help you with this task.

This guide includes information on IEEE Referencing.

You cite another author's work when you use IEEE referencing style. The citation is followed by the number [X]. Throughout your writing, citations are provided together with their corresponding references.

In-text Citations:

An IEEE in-text citation consists of numbers enclosed in square brackets, according to the references at the end of the document.

Citations in the text ascend starting with [1] unless you are citing an earlier source, in which case use the earlier number.

Additionally, citations may be treated grammatically as follows:

  •  Examples of footnote numbers are:

According to Jones [4] [5]...

Detailed information can be found at [1], [3], and [7].

According to Robert et al. [1],...

  •  Examples of nouns are:

As shown in [2]...

Based on [3] and [4], [5], …

Whenever authors are mentioned, the following procedures should be followed:

According to Rickard [5],...

According to Azzarello et al. [3],...

It is best to add et al. (meaning 'and others) after the first author if there are more than three authors. You should add the names of all the authors in the reference list for up to six authors. When there are more than three authors, use the word et al. in the reference list,

The author of the source should not be mentioned, or the date of publication in the text (i.e., "in Author Name [1]" must change to "in [1]").

The References List

Once the in-text citation numbers have been edited, the entire reference list must be renumbered. In-text citations and reference lists must have the same numbers.

In the end, the paper must include a numbered bibliography. Upon completion of your paper, you will find a list of all sources that have been cited in the text.  In your references list, arrange them in ascending numerical order, starting with 1 and going up to the highest number; this should match the order in which they are cited in your paper.  The entries in the reference list are not arranged alphabetically by author or title.

The Page Numbers

In the in-text citation, include the page(s) whenever you quote directly (refer to Using quotes in IEEE). When referring to the entire work or summarizing a longer section of the work, you do not need to provide page numbers. An in-text citation may include a page number, a range of pages, or a paragraph number when paraphrasing, summarizing or referring to a specific idea or theory. A reader can use this to locate the information he is looking for, especially if he is working through a lengthy or complex text or if he has to refer to the same source more than once.  When the location of a source is not covered in the in-text citation, use the reference list.

For citing the page number, follow these instructions:

(P.) indicates a single page, and (pp.) indicates a multiple-page document.

A single page ... as shown in [5, p. 17].

The multiple pages can be seen in [5, p. 6-12].

The paragraph can be cited as [4, para. 4.2].
