The main reason for the development of the storage industry is the increase in trade volume. Warehousing owes its modern arrangement to the North American states, which became the progenitor of today's self-storage.

Sources testify that the beginning was laid by Peter Minuet, who first built a Manhattan Island warehouse and began accepting items for temporary storage for a fee. He received local American goods (furs, tobacco) and European export goods (textiles, equipment, weapons), which doubled the entrepreneur's profit.

Until the early twentieth century, the main task entrusted to the North American warehouses was simple storage. The impetus for innovation came from the trade boom of the 1940s. The new conditions demanded greater attention to distribution. Around this time, individual storage warehouses were formed. The first organization of this format opened in Fort Lauderdale in 1958. A massive spread of self-storage facilities around the world marked the early 1970s.

To date, each citizen of the United States (including infants) has 0.7 m2 of storage space. The popularity of self-storage facilities is due to the increased mobility of Americans - a large percentage of citizens live in rental housing and often move around.

Europe and Australia

After the United States, the baton of the popularity of individual mini warehouses was followed by Australia and New Zealand. The "Green Continent" accounts for about 900 self-storage companies and 1,500 warehouses.

The self-storage format followed them to European countries, where it is now firmly entrenched in Britain (about 800 warehouses), France (380), the Netherlands, and Germany (100 each).

The development of the Internet and logistics has served as the next stage of evolution in the field of self-storage format warehouses - the invention of services offering cloud storage of things and objects. In this branch of business, the client does not pay for the area of a rented box but for a specific area occupied by the stored items. This significantly reduces the financial expenses of consumers and increases the efficiency of the use of usable space available to the service provider.
