Diablo, the Lord of D2R Items Terror, is one of them and played a key role in causing chaos in the mortal realm until a group called the Horadrim locked him and his fellow hellish buddies in Soulstones. Diablo's Soulstone was hidden in the ground beneath a monastery, and soon was forgotten.

With time and a town was named Tristram grew around the dilapidated and abandoned monastery, and Diablo began manipulating the archbishop from the newly built cathedral to release him from his jail. The unleashed Lord of Terror then turned Tristram into a town Tristram into a place of fear and despair. The players beat Diablo and were able to absorb his essence via the Soulstone in a bid to stop his growing influence.

In the sequel, it's revealed it was a mistake to fix Diablo's Soulstone to the forehead of players and absorbing his essence wasn't an ideal choice. The hero of the first Diablo is now corrupted with The Lord of Terror and is now bringing more demons into the realm and extending the chaos of Diablo's reign from the very first game. The possessed former hero is now known as Dark Wanderer, is also seeking to free Diablo's family members, Mephisto and Baal.

When they're reunited, they are able to open a doorway into Hell however, the protagonist can defeat Diablo and Mephisto and destroy their Soulstones to stop them from returning. In the expansion Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction, Baal is the last remaining Prime Evil, and after having obtained himself a Soulstone from Marius he attempts to corrupt the Worldstone. This breaks down the lines between the realms of Heaven, Hell, and the mortal world of Sanctuary.

A decade later, after Diablo 2. the next installment Diablo 3 was released. Diablo 3 brings players back to the Sanctuary world Sanctuary just twenty years on from buy diablo II resurrected items the events in Diablo 2 and its expansion.
