Kratom or Mitragyna spaciosa is a tree native to Southeast Asia. It is often found in countries like Malaysia, Borneo, Indonesia, Myanmar, Bali, Philippines, Thailand, etc. Some variants are also available in Papua new guinea. This tree is a distant relative of the coffee plant. Kratom, mainly Red Thai Kratom, often sells at a high price on the internet.

Kratom usually grows on fertile soil in a warm climate. According to the sources, the Kratom tree was introduced to the world by Dutch Colonial Botanist Pieter Korthals in 1839. But the people of the countries like Indonesia knew this tree and cultivated it because of its business value. This Evergreen tree usually grows to a height of 25 meters and has a straight and robust trunk with long and dark green leaves. The leaves are glossy and grow in the opposite patterns.

Kratom is produced from the leaves of this tree. These leaves are rich in alkaloids and have more than 40 active alkaloids in it. The main alkaloids are Mitragynine, Raubasine, 7- hydroxy mitragynine.
