Common Grades of Stainless Steel Used in CNC Machining

Several grades of stainless steel are commonly used in CNC machining, each with its own specific properties:  

 

  • 304 Stainless Steel: This is the most widely used grade due to its excellent corrosion resistance, formability, and weldability. It is suitable for a wide range of applications, including food processing equipment, automotive parts, and architectural components.  
  • 316 Stainless Steel: This grade offers superior corrosion resistance, especially in marine environments and applications involving exposure to chloride ions. It is commonly used in marine hardware, chemical processing equipment, and medical devices.  
  • 410 Stainless Steel: This martensitic stainless steel is known for its high strength and hardness. It is often used in cutlery, springs, and other components that require high durability.  
  • 316L Stainless Steel: This low-carbon version of 316 stainless steel is used in applications where welding is required, as it has a lower risk of weld decay.
