COURAGEOUS WOMEN ON THE NATCHEZ TRACE. What kind of courage did it take for widowed young women in the early 1800's to leave the security of their hometowns and move with their small children down the Natchez Trace to the Indian nations in search of opportunity? There are some remarkable examples. In one case, a young woman from Rutherford County, Tennessee helped found a settlement in the Choctaw Nation that today is Kosciusko, Mississippi. Of course, we may only have the histories of those who survived.
I am using those stories as the basis for a new historical fiction for young adult readers to be released later this year. You can find more information on the history of the Natchez Trace in my book Hardened to Hickory: The Missing Chapter in Andrew Jackson's Life, available at online bookstores. tonylturnbow.com #natcheztrace #books #history
