Hey John - welcome to the platform. The only irritating thing I've noticed is friend requests from accounts that have pictures of chicks and next to zero posts, and a message elsewhere like "Hi handsome!" then somewhere in the mix they ask to have you message them on their gmail account or whatever.
I just ignore the friend request using the X on the flyout menu.
