One of my favorite poems about how really those who suffer from handicaps really are the best examples of the atonement to me:
When a person's handicapped and can't help himself,
when his life depends on someone else,
life could be hard and tough to live,
It could be difficult and rough to give,
But I know many who though they can't run,
Can make the lives of others fun.
The desire within to smile through the day,
merits our utmost respect in every way.
Have you ever thought of what it must be like,
when you can't walk or ride your bike,
to have the desire within to play ball,
but knowing your legs wont move you at all?
Your life depends on the charity of others,
to even go to bed and pull over the covers.
The lessons of which the disabled learn
is by far the greatest that any can earn,
for we all can't make it through this life's fuss,
without the help of what Christ did for us.
