I was never privileged to serve in our military. However, I have been told by those who did serve (and have seen in numerous movies about the military) that soldiers are reminded from time to time that they no longer belong to themselves but are property of the United States government. They even wear uniforms that mark them as such and designate which branch of the service they belong to. As I thought about that I was reminded of Romans 13:14 where believers are told, “But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.” The phrase “put ye on” has the idea of wearing as a uniform. We are to wear Christ every day of our lives. Doing so identifies us as belonging to Him, which reminds me of two more verses. First Corinthians 6:19-20 tells us: “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? (2 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.” I have heard people say, “It’s my life, and I will do what I want.” But if you are a child of God, that simply is not true. Can you imagine a soldier saying that to his or her drill instructor, sergeant, or commanding officer? The simple fact is that we are bought and paid for by the “precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot” (I Peter 1:19), and we belong to Him. Wear the uniform and wear it proudly! You belong to the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
