For some time, I've been wanting to write about the Grand Delusion that has divided and weakened Americans in recent years. In 2006, Richard Dawkins, an English biologist, published his best-selling book "The God Delusion". It was warmly received by many on the Left and panned by those of faith regardless of their politics. As a self-avowed atheist, Dawkins promoted two major ideas in his book: 1) God does not exist and those who believe in God are delusional, and 2) someone can be moral without a belief in a God-given moral code. I’ll save his first proposition for another day and focus on the second which seems to be more relevant to what we’ve recently witnessed about the suppression of truth.
I think Dawkins intentionally used the word “delusion” in the title of his book because it comes directly out of both the New and Old Testaments of the Bible. In 2 Thessalonians 2:11, Paul says: “For this reason (refusal to love the truth), God sends them a powerful delusion so they will believe the lie (essentially, what Dawkins proposes in his book)”. In the book of Isaiah, the prophet wrote speaking God’s words: “I also will choose their delusions and bring fears upon them, because when I called, none did answer; when I spoke, they did not hear; but they did evil before my eyes.” Isaiah 66:4.
We live in a time of great fear – fear of COVID, fear of climate change, fear of foreign and domestic enemies, fear of an uncertain economy, etc. Those most susceptible to this fear appear to be those who lack faith and must rely on what they say is “science”. That might make sense if your earthly existence is all you have. But for those who see themselves as spiritual beings who are in their bodily form only for a short while, every calamity is no more than a challenge: are we going to rely on what our culture tells us or will we cling to the eternal truths of a Creator who loves us more than we can ever imagine?
We seem headed into a time when truth will become increasingly obscured by Leftist lies – a dystopian world right out of Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four. Privileged elites who fancy themselves as the sole guardians of civilization have decided they are the only ones smart enough to make decisions for everyone else. Of course, this is by definition delusional thinking. Any objective observer (for example, a extraterrestrial visitor with no political axe to grind) would immediately see what those blinded by Leftist fallacies don’t understand. Their world view is completely at odds with, as the signers of the Declaration of Independence said, the “Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God”.
In today’s secular society, there is no difference between good and evil. It’s all subjective – a matter of one’s situation (particularly class of victimhood). When tens of thousands of BLM and Antifa thugs burn down federal buildings, stone cops and wreak havoc on our cities, well that’s all justified because of some perceived fault in our law enforcement system. On the other hand, when a small group of criminals (maybe some of the same people who rioted last summer) hijack a peaceful rally of 500,000 Trump supporters, it gives Democrats a bogus excuse to impeach a president, call in 25,000 or more troops and install a corrupt, senile man who needed wholesale fraud to get elected. Why that just proves our democracy works! Spare me.
I’m tired of pointing out the Left’s hypocrisy. From now on, I’m going to call it for what it is. The powerful delusion that causes people to do evil in the eyes of God and then “celebrate it” by ripping off their masks is not simply a “double standard”. That would excuse such abhorrent behavior as being merely inconsistent with what these people expect from others. No, it’s much worse than that. It’s pure evil.
