"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose." Romans 8:28 (KJV),

I once heard a quote attributed to John Piper that compared the promise of Romans 8:28 to an impregnable fortress for the soul that trusts Christ. This verse is in a section of Romans 8 that tells us that the One who gave His Son also freely gives us all things; It goes on to remind us that no one can bring a charge against us; the only One who can condemn is the One who died for our justification. And further nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ. Read the list... tribulation, distress. angels, things present, things in the future; powers and principalities... Nothing can separate us from God's love in Christ Jesus. And the chapter that begins with "no condemnation" ends with "no separation." The promise of Romans 8:28 is that God causes the tribulations and distress; death, the things present or yet to come, etc. to work together for our eternal good. But the promise is only for a certain group of people: those who love God and who have been called by God according to His purpose That means Romans 8:28 is for Christians only.
