Whose word?
“…his delight is in the law of the Lord and in His law, he meditates day and night” - Psalms 1:2
Once I had been to my uncle’s house. Besides working in a college, he did ministry. A certain lady spoke to my uncle over the phone. She expressed her anguish saying, “Brother, I am deeply hurt by the word of my pastor’s wife. However, I try, I cannot forget it. I am not able to concentrate on my work as it is ringing in my ears. I cannot bear it.” My uncle interrupted her, while she was talking and put forth a question to her. He asked “Do you mind and think about God’s word or Jezebel’s word?
As I could not understand what he asked, I inquired my uncle about the question. My uncle explained to me saying, Elijah was the greatest prophet who stood for God courageously despite huge obstacles and performed dramatic miracles. Despite the many powerful moments in his life, he also had times of doubt and struggle. On hearing the death threat sent by Jezebel he was so discouraged that he asked God to take away his life. Elijah had just had a mountain top experience. He performed miracle for the widow of Zarephath (I Kings 17:14). His prayer brought fire from heaven to consume the burnt sacrifice (I Kings 18:38). Then when he prayed earnestly there was an abundance rain after 3½ years
(I Kings 18:41). The list of miracles goes long. He used to declare, “As the Lord of hosts lives, before whom I stand”. But at one point he pleads with God to take his life.
Yes, beloved in Christ, many a time, without exercising the word of God we harden our hearts, and we get depressed and discouraged by the word of worldly people like Jezebel. But when we seek God and look upon Him and listen to His word, we get courage, strength and victory under all circumstances. Whose word is ringing in our ears? Is the word of God inscribed in our hearts? Let us ponder.
