In a poignant historical irony, the son of General Grant's most trusted physician in his battle with throat cancer was chosen to create the statues for the commander's memorial in front of the the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. Henry Merwin Shrady took 20 years to perfect the statue and the surrounding memorial pieces from the Civil War.
