God speaks through the Bible, but the heart is deceitful and desperately wicked. The heart can confuse us and make us think we’re reading Scripture when we’re interpreting Scripture. We’ve all seen Christians arguing over theology with each side of the argument quoting Scripture to back up their positions. They argue about interpretations, and each side accuses the other of twisting Scripture. The veil of the flesh gets in the way with all its preconceived ideas. “But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ.” (2 Corinthians 3:15)

They read the Bible, but the veil of their fleshly nature blinded their eyes. However, the Holy Spirit can remove that fleshly veil in Christ. The Spirit of Christ leads every person, but you can think you’re hearing the Spirit when it’s some other spirit or your fleshly inner voice. You can be hindered by your doctrines and theologies. You can seek out a good Bible-believing teacher or pastor, but these teachers and pastors generally are following a set of doctrines they learned from someone you don’t know. Many prophets are prophesying. However, the spirit of the prophet is subject to the prophet. That means a prophet can mix speculative theology with prophecy to the point that it’s difficult to tell truth from fiction. Only the Holy Spirit can separate reality from unreality. And the Holy Spirit does reveal the difference to you.

The solution is seeking Jesus Christ and nothing else. If you sincerely desire truth, the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Christ, will eventually lead you into all truth. You may take a side step, but God knows your heart and will lead you back to the Path. If someone deceives you, the Holy Spirit will correct you and stop you at some point, provided you are still seeking Him rather than following a person, doctrine, or organization. Maintain your focus on Jesus, and He will see you through. Hold tightly to Christ, and hold your doctrine or other allegiances loosely. In addition, God has built safeguards into the gifts, ministries, offices, and orders of the church. To keep us safe, God gave us the order of multiple ministries working together in unity.
