Nov 8-13 – Bible study questions – Special Assignments
Assignment #1 : Lessons Learned
Please make a list of practical lessons we can learn from our study of “matters of liberty” and eating meats offered to idols.
Assignment #2 : Examples of Specific Applications
1 Corinthians 8-10 discusses eating meat offered to an idol as a matter of liberty if not done to worship the idol. It discusses three circumstances in which disciples should consider sacrificing their liberty.
10:14-22 Eating in the idol’s temple - Forbidden
10:27-30 Eating at a personal invitation to dinner - Depends
10:25,26 Eating what was bought in the market - Acceptable
Based on Bible teaching about “matters of liberty,” what conclusions should we reach regarding the following acts (into which of the categories we have studied does each fit)?
* Using names that originated in heathen idolatry to refer to days of the week or months of the year or the planets
* Eating at a tavern to be with friends even if I do not drink.
* Eating at a restaurant that serves alcohol (not a bar, but a family restaurant that sells alcohol) as long as I don’t drink alcohol or sit where it looks like I am. (What if I have a friend who thinks that is wrong.)
* Buying groceries or gas at a store that sells alcohol, lottery tickets, etc.
* Going into a casino to eat or be with friends but refusing to gamble.
* Attending or letting my child attend typical school dances even if they don’t dance?
* Attending a Catholic mass and eating the communion (to please family or friends but not believing in transubstantiation or Catholicism).
* Attending a funeral of a relative in a Catholic church but not participating religiously.
* Attending a denomination and singing to instrumental accompaniment (even if you remind yourself you do not believe in the instrument).
* Displaying a manger scene in one’s yard during “Christmas”
* Putting up a “Christmas” tree in one’s house
* Exchanging gifts with family at “Christmas”
* Taking “Christmas” as a day of vacation from work
* Should a woman wear slacks when visiting in the home of someone (Christian or non-Christian) who she knows believes women should not wear slacks.
* Drinking coffee (if others may think it is wrong)
* Voting in an election if we know Christians who object to voting
