In the 40's, 50's, and early 60's, teachers had time to teach, grade papers, and be an inspiration for generations. Many women became teachers so that they could be home when their children were out of school. Kids were better educated, played outside more, and succeeded in life. Elected officials of local school boards ran the school along with the principal, teachers, and parents. NOT big government. Big government is only necessary to provide for the defense of it's citizens against other nations, terrorists, and anarchy. We need to learn from our past.
