The concert that I attended was a musical theatre workshop performed by Diablo Valley College students. It was held on 11/22/2016. I heard various types of music in the workshop from different artists. The concert was also composed of musical acts that were inspired by films such as Beauty and the Beast. The overall performance in the concert was interesting and entertaining. The concert consisted of musical plays and performances that were enhanced through the application of styles and techniques that emphasized the messages and themes depicted.

The first group to perform was Scott Zhang and the Ensemble who sang All Good Gifts. Their performance reflected on a classical style of music that is still practiced among many groups whereby there is a leader who is the soloist and is accompanied by the rest of the members. A majority of the performances was sonatas based on their short musical compositions and the utilization of one instrument. Evidently, they can be viewed as sonatas based on the application of the piano to demonstrate the various emotions that the performers aim at expressing in their plays and music. The music and plays that were performed in the concert created a classical era feeling since a majority of them maintained the same structure from earlier contemporaries.

The performances in the show presented different musical genres and forms that present various themes and variations. Many performances in the concert were in the form of short stories and poems where the performers engaged in a dialogue among one another. The performed music belonged to the classical movement and was composed of descriptive and rhapsodic themes. In this case, each performance had a story to tell. Additionally, they portrayed different themes that were conveyed through the application of different musical styles that influenced their success at telling a story. The usage of dialogues in the stories plays an essential role in influencing the overall understanding of the audience. Additionally, dialogues also enhance the performer’s musical. In some of the acts, all the actors were engaged speaking in dialogue. The performances are short and apply different techniques ensuring that they gain the audience’s attention. The length of the performances also matters as it is important to ensure that the audience does not get bored.

The soloists and groups that were presented in the performance succeeded in emphasizing the emotional meaning of the work. They were all dressed appropriately and displayed confidence in their work. The dynamics did not have enough flexibility and variety with some performances being louder than others, which is natural considering the fact that the concert was conducted by different artists. Additionally, the dynamics were also influenced by the difference in the style of performances that were conducted in the concert.

The tempos in a majority of the performances sounded right. However, the tempo seemed to be slow in some performances such as that of Lisa Marie Taylor. The music that was performed in the concert reflected on a feeling of lyricism, motion, continuity, and climax. These aspects were shown in their flow and ability to tell their stories while, at the same time, sharing their emotions effectively. The tempos in the performances were controlled by the instrumentals. In this case, the instruments were played in sync with the performer’s pace. The speed of the performer influenced how the instruments were played.

The vocal performances in the concert were not well rehearsed. Some of the singers did not seem to have a clear understanding of their voices. Evidently, other singers often were wrong at pitching a note as witnessed in the first performance where their voices often collided in notes. However, the instruments used produced beautiful sounds. In some of the performances, the performer’s body motions added to the music effect enabling them to express their emotions. Such features were evident in the plays that were enhanced through the application of musical forms. The vocals in the play narrations were clear and enabled the audience to have a profound understanding of the stories that have been narrated.

The overall opera production can be considered a success based on their costumes and lighting. In this case, they were aesthetically and appropriately pleasing. The opera presented was not in its original setting. The performers reenacted some of the performances to make them their own. Their ability to reenact played an essential role in influencing their technical command of the music. Some of the performances were perfected and reflected on preparation based on their consistent singing and playing of instruments in tune. However, there were several wrong notes throughout the performance.

The audience was attentive throughout the whole concert. Additionally, they were entertained by the performances. I enjoyed the overall performance, especially the plays since they were composed with aspects of humor. Additionally, the messages in the stories and the music were entertaining. I would consider the overall musical theatre workshop a success regardless of the minor issues evident through the tones and vocals of the performers. A majority of the themes and songs that were played in the concert reflected on the performer’s ability to reenact the plays and make them their own. The concert showed their creativity and acting skills. It also demonstrated their entertainment skills based on their ability to make the audience laugh.
