Revelation - Allegorical or Literal?

Now is a good time to decide whether the Book of Revelation is allegory or literal

Are the world systems playing out the Book of Revelation?

Is it just a coincidence that so many world leaders desire a totalitarian, Marxist government?  Did Nimrod, a rebel against God and minion of Satan set the plan in motion?   The world citizens of the 21st century cannot help but notice the no longer subtle push for a one world order, one world governing body.  Some billionaires think that is a good idea - He who controls the wealth controls the world (makes the rules)!

I personally do not believe in coincidences.  Coincidence implies a world in free-fall; no Creator.   If there was ever a time for covenant theology adherents or Amillennialists to doubt their ideology it is now.  Unless there is a strong delusion  or pride, the world events starting 14 May 1948  and peaking(?) in 2020 should provide legitimacy toward a literal Book of Revelation.  Reformers take notice!  The year of Covid-19 pandemic should be seen as a coup de grâce on democracy and freedom by the Left (socialist/ Marxists) - the plan to finally change or destroy the United States; its protective influence in the world.   If it does not work this time, maybe the next crisis!  It certainly demonstrated how easy it is to cripple a country.  If Trump had not been president, this year could have been the end of USA.

The Holy Spirit is The Teacher /Guide understanding the Bible.  Literal here means:  https://answersingenesis.org/hermeneutics/how-we-interpret-the-bible-principles-for-understanding/

historical-grammatical approach - find the plain (literal) meaning of the words based on an understanding of the historical and cultural settings in which the book was written.

When I was growing up I heard that only 144 thousand will survive the Tribulation! It wasn't just the Jehovah Witnesses either.  I also heard that no Gentile will be saved during the Tribulation period, only Jews!  I personally do not believe either statement.  I often wonder how many actually read and study the Book of Revelation for themselves?  If the Book of Revelation is interpreted allegorically, what about the rest of the Bible?  What about the Book of Genesis, Daniel and Ezekiel?   Some think the whole Bible is allegorical with hidden spiritual mysteries!

Brief Background

How many Christians have accepted the allegorical deception?  When did this allegorical interpretation  begin and what was the reason for looking at the Bible this way?  A Jewish Old Testament interpreter, Philo of Alexandria AD 50,, is given credit for originating the use of  allegory for the Old Testament.   The use of allegory for the New Testament is given to Origen AD 250.  One reference from Origen's work:

Origen concludes this paragraph by saying, “Now all this, as we have remarked, was done by the Holy Spirit in order that, seeing those events which lie on the surface can be neither true nor useful, we may be led to the investigation of that truth which is more deeply concealed, and to the ascertaining of a meaning worthy of God in those Scriptures which we believe to be inspired by Him.”   From https://www.bibleandtheology.net/highlights-from-the-history-of-biblical-interpretation-allegorical-interpretation-and-origen-of-alexandria/

I find Origen's quote quite disturbing.  I often wonder how the "church fathers" received their [traditional]  distinction and place of spiritual honor in the Christian community.   Just because of their usefulness as "historians" does not or should not give them a place of  honor for wisdom and Christological understanding.  I discovered during my quest for Truth that this grievous error [allegorical interpretation] of the "church fathers" is so prolific in Seminaries and Christian circles.  I realized that allegorical/spiritual interpretation is often used for difficult portions of Scripture - events or descriptions which the human mind has trouble accepting.  For example, Creation and the "end times" ( eschatology), the book of Revelation.  Allegorist believe in hidden meanings and mysteries.  This article reinforces my claim, stated in one or more of my blogs, that allegorical interpretation is extremely subjective with many possible meanings which begs the question, who then decides what is truth?  This creates multiple camps - division in the Church (among all Christians).   I cannot believe God intended so much ambiguity to understanding Him and His plan for the world.

Prior to  1948 it would have been easier to accept an allegorical/ spiritual/mystical understanding of Scripture.  Evolution and Big Bang Theories were already being preached in scientific circles - implying no God/ Creator.  However, when Israel, as prophesied, became a nation again it should have given great pause to a non-literal Biblical understanding.  Unfortunately, tradition is hard to undo or correct.  If 1948 was not enough the events taking place in the 21st century should have quelled any remaining doubts.

Amillenarism or Amillennialism is based on allegorical interpretation claiming that a literal millennium will not happen, at least not on earth.  There should be no surprise that not all amillennialists agree on its meaning.  Some see this as occurring in heaven and is already happening, see the following reference:

"But we believe this reign is a heavenly one rather than on the earth. We believe it is a present-day reality. And that it involves all believers, in particular, those who have died and are with Christ. "   From https://www.christianity.com/wiki/christian-terms/what-is-amillennialism.html

The one world socialist agenda is out in the open including population reduction, tracking and control.  I ask why this looks like the Tribulation period mentioned in Revelation?  Do people really think this is a good idea?  One meaning of prophecy is to foretell an event before it happens.  The book of Revelation describes a future event, Tribulation.  The fact that the preparation is currently taking place is no coincidence. It should be a warning!  Many will continue to scoff at the idea the Book of Revelation is literal, will you?  Most people and some Christian claimants have accepted Man's bias as fact - what a pastor, elder, book claims about Truth and events in the Bible.  Is it possible that Man's wisdom or tradition is wrong and that a Great Tribulation, Jacob's Trouble, is almost upon the earth?  If you are a Follower of Christ Jesus will you trust just anyone to tell you what the Bible says [even if it contradicts current events]?   If you are not a follower of Christ Jesus, have you possibly believed a lie?  All I ask is that you make your own decision, question what you heard or read.  I recommend asking God to reveal Truth to you.  At least you will know that your eternal destination will have been made by you.

Concluding Remarks

I put my trust in God's Word, the Bible and seek Counsel from the Holy Spirit.

John 1:1–5 (ESV)   The Word Became Flesh:   1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

John 8:42–47 (ESV)   42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and I am here. I came not of my own accord, but he sent me. 43 Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word. 44 You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me. 46 Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? 47 Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God.”

John 14:5–7 (ESV)   5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”

Romans 9:1–2 (ESV)   God’s Sovereign Choice:  9 I am speaking the truth in Christ—I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit— 2 that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart.

1 Timothy 2:5–7 (ESV)  5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time. 7 For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

John 16:4–11 (ESV)  4 But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you.   “I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. 5 But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
