Dance is a specific art of telling a story, which does not contain any word. Still, music, costumes, movements, and emotions of the dancer allow conveying even the smallest detail of the story line performed on the scene. The main objective of this essay is to elucidate the features and peculiarities of the dance as the art of conveying ideas to the viewer on the basis of three videos.

Inventing Pookie Jenkins became famous in 2012 when accompanied the opening of Jacob's Pillow Dance Award. The choreographer Kyle Abraham chose music of Dizzie Rascal for the performance. Still, there is no simple tune; the classic melodies are mixed with hip-hop songs. Such an approach is quite typical for Kyle Abraham. For the choreographer, dance is a way of storytelling. Inventing Pookie Jenkins reflects Kyle’s inner life. Every move, whether it is slow or very fast and abrupt, contains emotions. It reveals what it means to be a black gay dreaming to perform the real art. It can be noticed from the video that his dances do not have a set structure. The presence of freedom in every movement allowed him disclosing his naked soul. A ballet skirt on a half-naked body in the beginning of the video symbolizes the life of a gay man as it is. There is no mask, but sincere intentions and a great willingness to be an artist. All this is created by Kyle Abraham.

Rennie Harris and his Puremovement is one of the brightest examples of hip-hop of high quality. The choreographer has established the dancing company in 1992. Their performances do not contain any philosophical idea. On the contrary, they are simple and accurate. There are six dancers who virtuously perform their parts either by turn or simultaneously. Their costumes are simple and their function is more technical than artistic. These hip-hop dancers are proud of the power of their bodies and dancing technique they demonstrate. Brilliant rotations on their heads, breaking, strutting, gliding and other elements require being in a good shape, and the members of Puremovement prove that they are. For this purpose, they even reject any t-shirts and stay half-naked in order to demonstrate their perfect body and every movement of muscles.

The absence of strict plot in the first part of the video proves that the common idea is not always necessary. In this case, their dance discloses freedom of expression and lack of boundaries in physical and mental world. The second part of dancing presents six dancers on the stage performing the same movements simultaneously. In this case, the performance conveys the idea of unity in completing any task. The accuracy and synchrony of every movement according to the rhythmic melody reveal that all dancers feel not only music but each other. That is why their dance is so amazing.

In the third video, the choreographer Bill T. Jones presents a piece of the Breathing Show performed in 2008. He wears orange costume in order to be seen by the viewers from the last raw. His first move with his hand touching lips indicates that he wants to tell a story. That is why to understand it. all viewers should keep silence. The performance is unique as during ninety minutes, the whole story is performed by one dancer. Still, the slow movements and dancing technique make the dance look like yoga therapy. The music used in the show is quite different. There are Schubert melodies as well as modern tunes. The diversity of music embodies the diversity of life. The performance looking like yoga perfectly presents life as it is. The character of Bill T. Jones is a person who stays on the ground with his two feet and has a strong body and free dreams. Everything stays in harmony in this person. There is no objection, no rebellion. Life flows as a river.

To sum it up, dancing is a peculiar way of storytelling. In spite of various rhythms and dancing techniques, dancers always have ideas they want to tell the viewers through the movements. The main idea of dancing is to say aloud without any words. Three videos discussed above are also guided by this idea.
