EA Sports announced today that the soccer game it will publish in 2023 will become part of the newly-launched EA Sports FC brand Mut 23 Coins, dropping the FIFA title the series been using since the days of the Sega Genesis and Super NES. The announcement marks a significant shift for one of oldest and most popular continuous series in video game history.

"We're thankful for our many years of great cooperation together with FIFA," EA CEO Andrew Wilson said in a statement. "The direction of global football is extremely bright, and the fan base around the world is never stronger. We have an incredible chance to place EA Sports FC at the core of the sport and to provide even more unique and authentic experiences to the growing football fans."

The game, which will be FIFA-less, will have "more than 300 licensed individual partners, which will give players access to more than 19,000 players from 700 teams, across 100 stadiums and more than 30 leagues all over the world." These partners include major international leagues such as those of Premier League, LaLiga, Bundesliga, UEFA, CONMEBOL and many others.

Other than the title of the game's cover the newly named game will also not have any official references on the World Cup, the quadrennial international sporting event organized by FIFA. EA has partnered with FIFA to release separate FIFA World Cup-branded FIFA World Cup titles every four years beginning in 1998 until 2014. It also introduced a unique World Cup mode to its popular Ultimate Team digital card game for FIFA 14. This partnership was later expanded to include an expanded World Cup update in FIFA 18.

It is believed that FIFA 23--which is scheduled to release later this year and will be EA's last game under the FIFA license--will expand to include the World Cup mode and include the women's World Cup for the first time in the history of the franchise.
