Spirited's soundtrack is not particularly melodious and is quite talky. That technique is often used to advance the plot in musicals where the cast discusses each musical act. In this instance, it is more likely to mask the vocal limitations of the leaders. In any event, it is one of the film's few disappointments. Ferrell and Reynolds are rehashing the film's cliches rather than advancing the story in a song. It's a running joke in Spirited that Present's employer, in particular, always cries out as a song is about to begin. The joke is expanded upon when workers at this imaginary corporation see how musical performances appear out of nowhere at their place of employment.
