The dye system of Diablo IV will allow players to change the colors of their armor, such as changing silver to gold, or replacing an old white cloth with a black cloth. According to lead character artist Arnaud Kotelnikoff every piece of armor can be dyed using a different color palette if the player chooses or the same color palette could be applied to the entire collection.
"This system was difficult to implement because metal-based materials can't be dyed with inappropriate colors when they follow PBR guidelines," Kotelnikoff said. "To combat this problem, we added data into our armor,
which recognizes certain types of material and tells the dye system which color works for what kind of material such as fabrics, leather and other particular surfaces. The result is armor that is dyable in different colors that are is still grounded and realistic within the universe we're building for Diablo IV."
