Diablo 4

There are few videogame legends more famous or enduring than from the Diablo cow level. There actually isn't a cow level in Diablo (1997), but rumors of 1 were so persistent and pervasive that Blizzard included one out of Diablo 2, and then brought cow-themed levels to Diablo 3 as well as World of Warcraft. There's even a whole Wikipedia entry dedicated specifically to the cow level, including a section on its "impact and legacy."

In light of this, a minimum of some fans were, without doubt, surprised and disappointed when Diablo general manager Rod Fergusson said that there is no cow level in Diablo 4. "We've been really centered on trying to keep it as being grounded as you possibly can," Fergusson said inside a May interview with Kinda Funny. "And because of this, there is no secret level in Diablo 4 that individuals might be searching for."

That's quite an unambiguous statement, backed by sound reasoning. But not most people are taking no to have an answer: A growing number of Diablo 4 players are actually searching for a cow level they believe needs to be stashed away inside somewhere—a belief driven by what they perceive to become clues scattered through the game.

Some of these hints are relatively overt, just like a reference to "Oxen Gods" in Ked Bardu who may grant a blessing to people who create a worthy offering.

Other so-called evidence is less convincing—like this cow directly a Diablo 4 map, for example.

But although some supposed clues are clearly a stretch, the quest for the elusive bovines is shaping up into an old-fashioned internet treasure hunt. This busy Reddit thread includes a running tally of all things of substance which has been discovered to date, a lot of it found within the game along with other bits datamined, and I won't lie, it can make a compelling argument.

For me, the existence of items included a Bloody Wooden Shard—"A worn, bloodstained chunk of wood with tattered leather straps. The letter 'W' continues to be crudely carved on a single side"—along with a badly damaged blue "musty tome" are impossible to overlook: Wirt's wooden leg along with a Tome of Town Portal are items necessary to open a portal towards the secret cow level in Diablo 2, and here they are.

One Diablo fan, Carpeggios, found the quest for cows so engaging he launched a Discord server to aid the effort called D4 – Not Finding a Cow Level.

"The datamined leads I saw within the Reddit thread were sufficient for me to would like to get 'ahead from the curve,'" Carpeggios explained over Discord. "I see other games do scavenger hunt type content, and frequently it's just right down to clue-finding and so on ... I think even within the case of there not as being a 'conclusion' towards the hunt, there are still many people that like to sign up, as I saw people do in such things as the GTA5 Mount Chiliad conspiracy."

Carpeggios said he isn't a committed believer in the buy diablo 4 gold cows, and suspects that many other people immersing themselves within the chase aren't either. Instead, he thinks most of them are just searching for something new and fun to complete within the city after beating the campaign. He set up Discord for simply the same reason: He said he takes Fergusson's statements concerning the absence of the secret level "at face value" but felt the interactive nature of Discord will make it a much better place for the city to come together, share ideas, and also have some fun.

"I think a part of me wanted to become involved inside a way I knew I could be, so I just started a Discord," he explained.

There's without a doubt that some of the stuff players are digging up is extremely credible: Either you will find secrets waiting to become found within the depths of Diablo 4, or someone at Blizzard has a large amount of fun at players' expense. On the other hand, it's not all lead is really a hot one.

"I think the spawning of the unique mob and the existence of cows within the area reaches the least interesting," Carpeggios said. "[People] visiting a cow into the spotlight is giving me serious 'Jesus on toast' vibes though."

But testing out wild and stupid ideas is "part of the fun"—if little else, "a minimum of you get memes and funny tangents"—and the same with Blizzard's insistence that there's no cow level in Diablo 4. Fergusson says it isn't there and Carpeggios believes him, but the younger crowd knows that obviously, Fergusson would state that, particularly if there is really a cow level.

"The 'there is no cow level' is simply an endless staircase of, could it be real or otherwise? It just folds on itself," he explained. "The best time for there to become a cow level is perfect when all reason points to there being no cow level. So for me, a minimum of, the fun bit right now is simply disregarding and seeking anyway."

The pursuit of cows heated up considerably today using the addition of the new "cow-level-hunt" channel on Sanctuary, the Diablo 4 Community Discord: Discussions, theories, screenshots, and locations of cows are flying fast and furious, and there is a palpable excitement towards the whole thing. These players are clearly using a lot of fun searching for cows in Diablo 4 regardless of what Rod Fergusson says.

Carpeggios acknowledged the new channel around the Sanctuary Discord renders his server obsolete. He said he'll likely leave his server up should the one on Sanctuary fails out, but he won't continue promoting it. He is going to keep his hand within the cow hunt, though.

"I possess a couple of suggestions to test," he explained. "I've been enjoying Diablo 4 but at level 83 I'm reducing from the grind, which may give me a bit more enjoyment until some seasonal content drops. Sometimes the city aspect of those scavenger hunts leads to someone just 'stumbling' on something, which may be fun to listen to about too. Monkeys typing on typewriters infinitely, etc."

Fergusson hasn't yet commented on the growing number of individuals who, unlike Carpeggios, have questions regarding whether he's being entirely forthcoming concerning the Diablo 4 cow situation. I've reached out to Blizzard to inquire about if he's perhaps changed his mind on whether there may actually be some secret cows somewhere in Diablo 4, and can update you if I get a reply. The smooth is offered.
