NBA 2K21 can be a difficult game to master due to a new Shot Meter, a few changes to the game's mechanics, and some new mechanics. Fortunately, we're here to assist you.
It won't be easy this year to reach the high levels of play you've seen in previous NBA 2K games. Aside from some major changes to how shooting works, 2K has packed the game with a slew of other small tweaks and changes that drastically alter the experience from what you're used to.
It takes time and patience to work your way back up to a reasonable level of play. And, because the game's approach to teaching you how to use its new tricks can be a little enigmatic at times, we've decided to lay it all out for you right here. If you want to be a better NBA 2K21 player, here's what you need to know.
- Be familiar with shooting techniques.
In this year's version of the game, the developers are really making you work for your buckets. You must now time your shots and release the Pro Stick or shoot button at different times depending on where you are on the court, rather than using the green meter as in previous games. Learn the court, get a feel for shooting from various locations around the arena, and keep in mind that no two shots are ever the same. The shooting techniques will bring you big help.
- Remove the shot meter from the equation.
If you prefer a more traditional game experience, you can turn off the shot meter in the settings to reclaim some control. You'll need to release the shot button or Pro Stick at the height of your jump in order to get your best attempt on the bucket lined up if you do this, as you'll be focusing more on the player – rather than a distracting bit of UI.
- Learn Hot Zones
To balance the focus on the fiddlier and trickier shot meter, developers at 2K decided to buff Hot Zones a lot. What's that for you? Well, Hot Zones will give your player a better boost. Practice with your favorite players and see where their hot zones are to make their shots more consistent. You can also learn these in practice mode.
- Life's badges
Learning and knowing your player's badges is essential to their court success. Understanding what each badge is, how it applies to their style of play, and then picking the correct badges when levelling MyPlayer is essential to make them stand out. Playing consistently in MyCareer and The Neighborhood, and you'll start earning points in Shooting and Playmaking (and these can make a difference in the long run!).
In NBA 2K21 more than any other NBA title, when you're heavily guarded, you'll see possession taken away and your shots intercepted. Sniff open space and do your best to get away from the defenders, and you'll have more success with your shots. Hit L1/LB to give friendly players a screen to allow you to set up better.
- Brave defense
If you know that an opponent has a very good offensive athlete in their possession, do everything you can to stay on them and deny them the space they need to shoot. Hold O/B to stand your ground and make it harder for enemy players to get the layup off you.
