And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, Concerning the feasts of the LORD, which ye shall proclaim to be holy convocations, even these are my feasts. Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings.

The Sabbath or Shabbat was a Holy Convocation, a sacred time of assembly, that occurred each week. It marked the Day of Creation when God rested from the labor of creating the universe and God’s people were to come together to honor their God.

To mark the great work of creation and honor God who was Creator, the people would assembly to worship and praise Him and they would do no work. They would rest from their labors as God had rested from His. They would rest in their faith of God power and provision.

The day of rest for the Christian, New Covenant believer was moved from the 7th day of the week to the 1st day to honor the resurrection of Jesus, the Son of God. There is no passage in the New Testament of the church ever meeting on any day other than Sunday. Every reference to the church assembly, including Pentecost, was on the 1st day of the week.

But please note, the day has changed but the principle has not. We are still to take time to rest in God’s power and provision and rest in Jesus’ redemption and resurrection. One day is not enough to honor the work of God, but ignoring the day of rest is to dishonor what God has done.

Mark 16:2 And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun.

Luke 24:1 Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.

JJohn 20:1 The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre.

John 20:19 Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.

Acts 20:7 And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.
