Why is being “different” so demonized in our society? To the point where people have to change themselves, letting go of their uniqueness. Let’s discuss the feeling of being different and how we can overcome it.

You are told to be more than ordinary. You are expected to be special – yet why is it that everyone judges you for being “different?” In a swarm of people, why have you painted a different color? Why do people ostracize you just because you speak differently, wear different clothes, or have different aspirations? But because you are born into this world, you have no choice but to conform. You paint yourself in common colors just to blend in.

But why should one change for people who don’t and will never have a positive impact on their lives?

Let’s discuss how to fight off the feeling of being different.

Accept Yourself

The first thing one must do to overcome the feeling of being different is to accept that they are different – and it’s not bad. If you look at the greatest leaders in the world, there is something quirky, something special, something different about them. If being different was so bad, why do people look up to them now and try to be like them? It is because they accepted their differences to the point where people started getting used to them until the differences ultimately became their identities.

Explore Your Strengths

Why is it that you think differences are a bad thing? It’s because you are not exposed to what your talents and qualities can contribute to the world. Explore yourself, and get to know yourself better. See what you love to do alone, so you’re without the fear of being judged. Explore what you are good at and polish those skills accordingly. Once you start to realize the value you can offer others, you will begin to respect yourself.

Love Yourself

Speak to yourself with respect as you would speak to a loved one. It is understandable for you to delve into self-sabotage when there are heads turning, looking at you, and gossiping about you for being different. In these moments, it is important to treat yourself with love and care and prioritize being kind to yourself. Love yourself for who you are.

Find the Right People

The people you surround yourself with are an essential factor that determines your self-esteem. If you have friends who ridicule you, highlight your “flaws,” and make you feel anything less than important, it is time to cut them out of your life. Life is too short to let these people walk all over you. You are better than this; you deserve nothing but the best.

Believe In Yourself

If there is one thing you can do to conquer any adversity in life, it is to have an undying self-belief. You must believe in yourself. It keeps you persistent; it helps you survive. People will always judge you for one thing or the other. But they will come, and they will go. And what will always remain constant, is you.
