The gaming press began to gripe about Nintendo publishing too many Mario games after New Super Mario Bros. 2, but now that the series has become an annual franchise with little to no variation, it's clear that the criticisms were well-founded.

Not including spinoffs like role-playing games and (original) sports games, the following have been the primary mario games for handheld and console since 2006:
