I have decided to become a prosperous businessman. However, it is obvious that my desire alone is not enough to reach my goal. The author of Thick Face, Black Heart Chin-Ning Chu, an immigrant from Taiwan, explains that it is obligatory to achieve a certain internal state in order to reach success. A ‘thick face’ makes one invulnerable to the opinions of others. A ‘black heart’ is the ability to act without paying attention to the consequences. The main step is a self-inquiry since it plays a crucial role in a consciousness transformation. After a mental re-evaluation, I began to realize my unlimited abilities. Despite experiencing difficulties that any foreign student has while living in the USA, I have rejected fear and uncertainty, and now, I fully rely on my own thoughts and expectations.
I strongly believe that the ‘killer instinct’ is an excellent kind of behavior that is worth mastering. The killer instinct, on which the ‘black heart’ approach is based, means having the courage to complete the work properly. This instinct helps overcome inner fear and anxiety and provides a perfect control over the mind. The start point may be difficult to spot at the early phase on the way to the dream. A systematic education is the right solution, and it can be either reading business literature or visiting some educational courses. I have restructured my timetable in order to have some hours for gaining the knowledge daily. The regime compliance was rather difficult at first time. Nevertheless, I have managed to overcome the laziness and to protect myself from other external factors. Due to the cold mind, I can concentrate only at the studying process. The same action scenario can be observed during medical operations: the surgeon always does the work dispassionately. The doctor aims to heal the patient and eliminate the cause of disease or injury. This profession requires self-composure and ignores the fact of hurting and bringing the pain. An impartial force is a synonym to the ‘killer instinct’.
The thick face, black heart theory tells that everybody should follow the dharma. This law of nature determines one’s life role. When one devotes their life to the main goal, their dharma is protected and the soul is overfilled with freedom. Sometimes, it seems to people, regardless of the work they do, that it is not what the God created them for. The problem is not in the work as there are misunderstandings of the current work role in a context of a global destiny. I considered many occupations and tried to highlight all benefits and drawbacks of particular profession. Despite my favorite activity such as photo making, I stopped at the business launching. I am convinced that my profession is carefully selected and it will bring advantages in the future.
An endurance spirit is also a necessary quality for personal growth. Endurance training means the ability to understand and overcome the difficulties, foresee risks, and take offence calmly. All these factors will ensure fame and success. The world history is overwhelmed with people who are considered to be the masters of ‘thick face, black heart’.
A brilliant example is the biography of Abraham Lincoln. He had a difficult childhood because of his family’s poverty and father’s absolute illiteracy. Abraham constantly suffered from abuses. At the age of 21, he left his parents' home forever. At 22, he lost the election race, and two years later, he encountered a new setback in business. At 26, he was in despair because of the death of his loved one, and as a result, he had a nervous breakdown when he was 27. At 34, he lost the election for a position of a Congressman. When he was 45 and 49, he could not become a Senator. Finally, at 52, he became the 16th president of the United States (McPherson). Lincoln is the man I most admire and respect. His life path has taught me that I have no right to give up without a battle for my dream and keep calm even under a huge pressure.
Without a doubt, an integration period is always hard. I believe that my sincere desire and hard work will help to solve problem of adapting in the USA and become a successful person just like the author of this book Chin-Ning Chu, an immigrant from Taiwan, who also used the above-mentioned principles in her life. Asian philosophy provides immense possibilities for those who desire to master it. Self-addiction and a desire to fight can ensure success.
