Gems and Abilities: The basis of your build in Path of Exile

Path of Exile does not have a typical class system as known from other representatives of the genre. Instead of giving your character a fixed set of skills, the developers leave it up to you to decide which attacks and skills you equip your hero with. The so-called skill gems play a crucial role in this. You get them by completing quests, from defeated opponents or from traders. The gems are basically divided into two categories:

Active Gems: These stones give your character an active ability. These can be normal attacks and spells, or special effects such as incantations, traps, curses or auras. In order to be able to use an active gem, you have to socket it into your equipment.

Support Gems: Support Gems cannot be activated directly. However, if you link them to your active abilities, they influence them and strengthen them in very different ways.

You will encounter gems in the colors blue, red and green (in rare cases also white, but these are exceptions). These colors have two meanings: On the one hand, you can only place the stones in matching colored bases, on the other hand, they also indicate which of the three basic values they are associated with and which archetypes therefore particularly benefit from them.

  • Green: skill
  • Blue: intelligence
  • Red: strength

Gem - base and link

As already mentioned, you must socket the gems in your equipment before you can use them in combat. If you use the gem and meet the necessary requirements, you will then be able to assign the corresponding ability to a hotkey in the lower right area of your interface.

However, active skills often only develop their true potential when they are reinforced with a passive support gem. To do this, you need equipment with multiple sockets, which are also linked to each other. The link is shown to you by a golden line between the plinths.

You should also note that not every support with every active ability works together. You can tell whether you can strengthen an ability by the characteristics that both the abilities and the support gems have and which you can find in the upper area of the gem description. These can be, for example, aura, area of effect, attack, spell or bow. In general, you can strengthen an active ability with any number of (different) support gems. However, this is limited by the number of sockets in your equipment, so that a link of six stones is usually the highest of feelings. All gemstones always have certain requirements for the basic values of strength, intelligence and dexterity, which continue to increase with the level of the gems. You should always make sure that you can meet the conditions through your character values or the values on your equipment.

Using a simple example, we want to explain what such a link can look like:

The Tectonic Slam ability is a melee attack that deals area damage over a large area. The attack has the characteristics of fire, attack, area of effect, and melee. Depending on the color, the gem needs sufficient strength and a red base.

Multiple Strike (Multistrike) is a support gem that has the characteristics of attack and close combat and can thus be combined with Tectonic Strike. If you link the stones, Tectonic Strike is carried out not just once but three times in a row within a very short time. That might be pretty strong, but such reinforcements are also urgently needed if you want to survive later in the game.

When choosing your active abilities, you should limit yourself to just a few attack gems. Many players focus on one attack for area damage and one that is particularly effective against boss opponents. This leaves more free slots for curses, auras, movement and defense skills.

Gems and equipment are very important in the Path of Exile, and to obtain these items we need a lot of poe currency items.
