How Does Acousto-Optic Q-Switch Modulator Work?

An acousto-optic Q-switch modulator is a device used to control the output pulse characteristics of a laser. It works by introducing time-varying losses into the laser cavity, effectively switching the laser on and off. Here's a breakdown of how it works:

  • Acoustic Wave Generation:An RF signal is applied to a piezoelectric transducer, generating an acoustic wave within the modulator's crystal.
  • Light Deflection: The acoustic wave creates a periodic refractive index grating in the crystal. When light passes through this grating, it is diffracted into different orders.
  • Q-switching:By controlling the RF signal, the diffraction efficiency can be modulated. When the RF signal is off, the diffraction is minimal, and the laser operates continuously. When the RF signal is on, the diffraction efficiency increases, causing significant losses in the cavity, leading to a rapid buildup of energy and a subsequent high-power pulse.
