Introducing a new service - I was recently asked to craft a memorial paperweight item for an individual lost in combat in service to their country with a focus on red, white and blue colors. Given that it was a gold star family, I tried to figure out a way to represent a gold star in the piece. As I can't afford large amounts of solid gold and gold foil is incredibly difficult to form and keep in a star pattern, I tried to find a different way to represent this aspect of the memorial.

Remembering that, in addition to soft metals being compatible with glass blowing, I could meld in mica, I found some gold tinted mica and gave that a try. Came out just beautifully.

This first piece is in memory of Russell Meade Durgin who died in 2006 in Afghanistan.

If you'd like to order a similar piece as a gift for a gold star family, please go here https://spirit-glass.myshopify.....com/collections/pap Each piece will be inscribed with a christian cross, and signed and dated by me. If you provide the initials of the fallen, I will inscribe that into the piece as well and list their name on my website.

If you are an immediate family member of someone who lost their lives in service to the US, then a custom crafted piece will be available to you free of charge.

New Item!

Larger centerpiece / display rondels - 8" to 10"+ in diameter

The bottom left and bottom right ones are available https://spirit-glass.myshopify.....com/collections/ron and https://spirit-glass.myshopify.....com/collections/ron

Some background on these: I had a request for a larger display piece based on the rondel design, so I've been working out a way to make that happen. Making the smaller rondels (typically 4" or less) is a fairly straightforward process. Making something larger (8"+) required a larger block for shaping, more arm and wrist strength (requiring 3 to 4 lbs of glass on the end of a pipe), more patience (trying to separate 3+ lbs of molten glass off a pipe is a wee bit nerve wracking), more electricity (due to the limited size of my kiln, I can only make one piece a day) and a little bit of science.

Curious factoid about melting glass: you can take a large mound of shaped glass, stick it in a kiln, and the glass will always melt down and spread out to about a half inch thickness making an almost perfect circle. As long as the initial shape is well balanced and the color evenly distributed, you get a pretty awesome display piece for your home.

The top left rondel came out at over 10 inches wide and went to the person ordering it, the second one on the top right went to my dad, remaining two are currently available.

Prices for custom made pieces will range from $80 to $120 depending on the final size. Display holders are available for purchase as well at $15. Shipping can run an additional $10-$20. If interested in a custom order, please let me know what colors you would like!

About

The name as well as the logo image for my business, Spirit Glass, is rooted heavily in my own faith development. The name is drawn from an overall belief in a Creator who provides us with the skills and abilities that we can choose to use or not use as we journey through this life, and who, from time to time, changes things in ways that are not often easy to understand (if you haven’t read it yet, check out “The Case for Miracles by Lee Strobel which highlights numerous case studies on the ways that God continues to interact with our modern lives.
.
The logo image has two important components – the flame representing the Holy Spirit and the gifts that are continually given to us while the “t” is shaped in the form of a cross, representing Jesus's love for all who call to him and the path of life I seek to lead to improve not only my own well-being but to support those around me.
