12-10-2020 -- WHEN SHOPPING, The Tactical Court Reporter reminds you men to keep your wallet in an inside jacket pocket, and you ladies to wear your purse cross-body style, keep it zipped, and do not leave it in the basket when grocery shopping. Thieves are very good at stealing either the entire bag or just reaching in and relieving you of your wallet.

I've been away for quite some time due to illness, but I hope to continue posting classic ideas for Staying Safe in an Unsafe World. So far I've concentrated on Awareness, Uncommon Sense, and Common Sense. Be checking, because I will talking about concealed carry in the near future. Thank you!
GETTING TO YOUR ROOM AFTER CHECK-IN. If you've ever been burgled or attacked these precautions are easy by comparison.
1. If you're alone, never get in an elevator by yourself. Always ask to be accompanied to your room. Be ready to tip. It's worth the cost.
2. If you're with a group, get in together and stand forward by the door to discourage strangers from entering. If someone tries, politely say "we're full; we'll send it back down immediately for you.
3. LOOK BOTH WAYS BEFORE ENTERING YOUR ROOM. Scenario: You open your door, and someone quickly approaches and shoves you inside or stops the door before it closes. They enter and then you're locked in with them and easy prey. * Do not open the door if anyone is approaching from either end of the hallway. * Rooms opposite a stairwell are risky. This is one of the easiest ways for a Bad Man or Woman to gain entrance.
4. Cover your door peep hole with a sticky note or masking tape. An easily-purchased reverse peep hole viewer lets anyone look into your entire room.
5. There are tools that let a burglar unlock your door including that metal safety lock. A rubber door stop is an inexpensive way to jam the door from the inside. There are many affordable travel door locks available at Home Depot or dozens of online security companies.

6. Don't have any extra door lock security items with you? Make a pyramid of the glass drinking cups in the room, or any items in the room that will make noise if the door is opened. At least you have a warning.

Hotel / Motel Safety: When traveling, your personal safety in hotels is your responsibility -- and it all starts at the front desk.

Before the front desk clerk gives you your key, instruct them not to announce it out loud. If they do, ask for another room. No one should know that room number other than you.

Next up: Going to and entering your room.

Avoid Confrontation: Look ahead and identify possible trouble areas. It's a no-brainer: Don't go there! Choose a different route, a different parking lot, a different walking path. Blending in and not standing out and drawing attention to yourself can help you get to your destination unharmed and in one piece.
