GETTING TO YOUR ROOM AFTER CHECK-IN. If you've ever been burgled or attacked these precautions are easy by comparison.
1. If you're alone, never get in an elevator by yourself. Always ask to be accompanied to your room. Be ready to tip. It's worth the cost.
2. If you're with a group, get in together and stand forward by the door to discourage strangers from entering. If someone tries, politely say "we're full; we'll send it back down immediately for you.
3. LOOK BOTH WAYS BEFORE ENTERING YOUR ROOM. Scenario: You open your door, and someone quickly approaches and shoves you inside or stops the door before it closes. They enter and then you're locked in with them and easy prey. * Do not open the door if anyone is approaching from either end of the hallway. * Rooms opposite a stairwell are risky. This is one of the easiest ways for a Bad Man or Woman to gain entrance.
4. Cover your door peep hole with a sticky note or masking tape. An easily-purchased reverse peep hole viewer lets anyone look into your entire room.
5. There are tools that let a burglar unlock your door including that metal safety lock. A rubber door stop is an inexpensive way to jam the door from the inside. There are many affordable travel door locks available at Home Depot or dozens of online security companies.

6. Don't have any extra door lock security items with you? Make a pyramid of the glass drinking cups in the room, or any items in the room that will make noise if the door is opened. At least you have a warning.
