"The Cockspur Island Lighthouse is the smallest lighthouse in Georgia and ceased operation as an active beacon in 1909. Cockspur’s first brick tower, used as a daymark, was built between March 1837 and November 1839. Situated on an islet off of the southeastern tip of Cockspur Island, the lighthouse has seen its share of tragedies, from a 30-hour siege during the Civil War to several hurricanes. Fort Pulaski National Monument has closed the Cockspur Island Lighthouse and Cockspur Island due to ongoing preservation efforts. An overlook trail at Fort Pulaski offers visitors the best chance to get a closer look at the lighthouse."
