The Attributes of God
The eternal, unchangeable God gives us the privilege of knowing Him personally.

Psalm 90:1-2

1 Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations.
2 Before the mountains were born Or You gave birth to the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.

As believers, we desire to know the One we worship. Though our comprehension is limited, understanding all we can helps to deepen our relationship with the Lord and also to share our faith. So let’s explore four attributes of Almighty God. He is ...
1 A “person” (Exodus 20:1-6 1 Then God spoke all these words, saying,
2 ``I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
3 ``You shall have no other gods before Me.
4 ``You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.
5 ``You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me,
6 but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.) God created us with the ability to feel, reason, and make decisions, and we were made in His image (Genesis 1:26 Then God said, ``Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.". That means He also has the capacity for emotion. And in fact, the Bible frequently mentions God’s feelings, like anger and love.
2 Spirit (John 4:22-24 22 ``You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews.
23 ``But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers.
24 ``God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.". He has no limitations; He isn’t confined to a body or place, so we can worship in His presence anywhere. His Spirit indwells each believer (Romans 8:9 However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.), so we can enjoy His companionship and guidance anytime.
3 Eternal (Isaiah 40:28 Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth Does not become weary or tired. His understanding is inscrutable.) He always was, is now, and forever will be. Nothing existed before Him or will outlast Him.
4 Unchangeable (Malachi 3:6 ``For I, the LORD, do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed.) His nature and attributes always remain constant.
What a blessing that God would reveal His character to us. And how amazing that He makes it possible for us to have a relationship with Him through Jesus. May we praise Him and continue seeking to know Him better through His Word.

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. Knowing, therefore, the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are well known to God, and I also trust are well known in your consciences.” 2 Corinthians 5:9-11

Ponder This

There’s not going to be any more soul-winning in Heaven. All the soul-winning you’re ever going to do for all eternity, you must do now. Don’t you want to bring somebody to Heaven with you? A denominational worker, who worked his entire career with the Southern Baptist Convention, called me. I went to visit him on his deathbed. He said to me, “Pastor, I am saved, and I’m going to Heaven.” He said, “I am not afraid to die, but I am ashamed to die because I’ve not been a soul winner.”
Set your eyes on the prize of eternity. One day, in the clear light of eternity, you will say, “Oh God, why was I not a soul winner?” You get to Heaven by the grace of God. I cannot work my soul to save—that work my Lord has done. But I will work like any slave for the love of God’s dear Son! Paul said, “You want to know what motivates me? What is my compulsion? To please Him. What is my compensation? I am going to the judgment seat of Christ” (author’s paraphrase).

• What is the hardest part about sharing your faith? How are you seeking growth in this area?
Practice This
Look for an opportunity today to meet unbelievers and get to know them.

The Greatness of God
Our God, clothed with majesty and power, is truly worthy of our praise.

Isaiah 40:12-26

When you think of God, what comes to mind? People often view Him in the way that best fits their particular need or situation. The truth is, His character encompasses far more than we could ever comprehend or try to explain. At the same time, it is important to look at Scripture in order to learn all we can about the One we worship.
Today we’ll focus on one attribute: His greatness. Isaiah 40 tells us God is greater than creation (v. 12), for everything we see came into being by His hands. He is higher than the nations or any idol fashioned by the finest craftsman (vv. 15-2. In fact, He is above the entire world and all mankind, surpassing even the heavens and galaxies (vv. 22-23, 26).
Our Father’s thoughts and ways are far grander than our own (Isaiah 55:9 ``For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways And My thoughts than your thoughts.) and lofty compared with what we can understand. Psalm 93:1 states, “The Lord reigns, He is clothed with majesty; the Lord has clothed and girded Himself with strength.” (The LORD reigns, He is clothed with majesty; The LORD has clothed and girded Himself with strength; Indeed, the world is firmly established, it will not be moved.)
Consider the awesome God we serve. He truly is worthy of our praise. When we grasp even a fraction of His greatness, our response should be humble worship. After all, who are we that a God like this would desire our friendship—so much so that He sent His Son to die for our sins?

And He turned and said to them, “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.” Luke 14:25-27

Ponder This

How badly do you want to be a disciple of Jesus? Do you want to be a disciple at the cost of personal relationships? Do you want to be a disciple at the cost of personal reputation? Our personal ambitions have to be laid in the dust to follow Jesus Christ. I wanted to be an architect or a lawyer. God called me to be a pastor. I’m infinitely glad that He did. But when you come to the Lord Jesus Christ, you leave the plans of your own. You forsake yourself. There is a difference in self-denial and denial of self. You can have self-denial. You can say, “I’ll do without food. I’ll do without sleep. I’ll do without this or that.” That’s self-denial. But to deny self is far different. Simon Peter forsook his nets, but it was a long time before Simon Peter forsook his self.
Are you willing to take yourself off the throne and put Jesus Christ on it? If not, you can’t be a disciple. The personal relationships, personal realization, and personal reputation you have in life all need to be laid at the foot of the cross. Then you take up His new life. From the moment you come to Christ, you must continually ask, “Jesus, what do You want me to do?”
• What has been costly for you about following Jesus? What have you had to sacrifice or lay down?
• How often do you ask God what He wants you to do? How might you make this a habit?
Practice This
Think about something you have been holding onto that you need to surrender to God. Confess to Him and create a visual reminder of your new life in Christ, such as a Scripture you’ve written out to remind yourself that you belong to Him.
