Rods down and glowing in the sun is Minneapolis, St. Paul & Sault Ste Marie (Soo Line) H-1 class "Pacific" number 715. A perfect example of the simple but stylish finish being applied to most products of the American Locomotive Company, including this beautiful coal-burning 4-6-2 that rolled out of the Schenectady plant carrying construction number 39906 in 1906. The class was delivered with saturated boilers, inside pistons, and Stephenson valve gear that transferred 23,701 pounds of tractive effort to the rails through 69" drivers. Around 1920 they were superheated, but only increased their tractive effort to 25,623 pounds. This glamour shot of number 715 is noted as dating to around 1909.
