DO YOU THINK ABOUT FOOD?
Elijah was running from wicked Queen Jezebel. He’d been running for two days and was exhausted, so exhausted he was ready to end his life.

But God was watching over him and thinking about him, thinking about he needed to be refreshed and nourished. So He sent His angel to bake him some bread on some hot coals and give him a jug of water. The angel woke up and told him to get up and eat!

Elijah enjoyed this delicious hot bread and pure energizing water from God and went back to sleep! Awhile later, the angel come back, shook him again, and told him to eat some more. “You’ve got a long journey ahead” he said.

He got up, ate and drank to the full, and set off on his journey. It was such a nourishing meal that we walked in the strength of that food for 40 days and nights.

What gets to me about this incident is how God thinks about food. He thinks about feeding His people. He thinks about nourishing us. God loves food. He created all the beautiful fruits and vegetables for us to eat. He gave us creativity to cook with them and make them into palatable and delicious meals.

Dear mother, if God thinks about feeding, don’t you think we should think about it too. Shouldn’t we be thinking like God? Of course, we can’t help thinking about it in our homes when we have hungry children all around us and a husband wanting a good hearty meal. But sometimes we don’t think about it enough.

We just cook the food because we’ll have grumbling children if we don’t. I believe we should creatively think about it. Think about how we can nourish our families. How we can make the most nourishing and health-filled meals. How we can make the food taste tantalizing and delicious.

Food is all about taste. That’s why God created so many different tastes in foods. Food is boring if it’s tasteless. An important part of preparing food is to make it appetizing and delectable to the palate.

So let’s think about preparing food for our families. And not only our families, but for others. Do you love hospitality? There’s hardly an evening where we don’t have people joining us at our meal table.

You are not wasting your time as you think about food for your family. You are being like God. He thinks of how He can feed and strengthen His people, both physically and spiritually. That’s one of the powerful things about motherhood. We are feeders, both physically and spiritually. We reveal the likeness of God as we do this in our families and also reaching out to others.

ESPECIALLY FOR YOUNG MOTHERS
The magazine, Above Rubies, is for all women (and men love to read it too). However, I believe it is essential for the precious young mothers of this generation as they live in the overwhelming time of raising their little ones.

Although I have been publishing Above Rubies for just on 48 years, I realize that there are thousands of mothers of this new generation who still haven’t even heard of Above Rubies.

And yet these mothers desperately need the encouragement of this magazine. They need to be uplifted and strengthened in their great calling. They need to hear the truth from God’s word rather than the indoctrination of this deluded humanistic and feministic age.

If you know any young mothers in your church, in your neighborhood, close at hand or far away, you are welcome to send me their names and addresses and I’ll be happy to send an Above Rubies magazine to them. What about your daughters and your daughters-in-law? Are they getting the magazine?

LOCKED TOGETHER
The first Scripture about marriage in the Bible talks about cleaving to one another. The word cleave in the Hebrew is “dabaq” meaning “to cling, to stick, to stay close, to be joined.” This word is used in other places in the Bible and helps us to understand more of what it means.

One of my favorite places is found in Job 41:15-17. It’s in the middle of the passage where God describes Leviathan, this powerful creature that no man can tame. God describes fire leaping out of his mouth and smoke pouring out of his nostrils. Wow, it’s an exciting passage to read to your boys who love dinosaurs!

But in verses 15-17 (GW) God gives this description: “It’s back has rows of scales that are tightly sealed. One is so close to the other that there is no space between them. Each is joined (dabaq) to the other. They are locked together and INSEPARABLE.”

The New English Translation says: “Its back has rows of shields, shut up closely together as with a seal; each one is so close to the next that NO AIR CAN COME BETWEEN THEM. They LOCK TIGHTLY TOGETHER (dabaq), one to the next; they CLING TOGETHER AND CANNOT BE SEPARATED.”

What a beautiful picture of marriage. God wants us to be so one together that not even air can come between us! He wants us to be so tightly locked together that we cannot be separated!

I don’t think this happens immediately. We often come to marriage with an independent spirit. It takes time to throw aside independence and instead to think oneness and live oneness. But this is God’s ultimate picture of marriage. And this is the glory of marriage This is the picture of Christ and His church.

I’m reminded again of the words of John D. Garr who when describing marriage states: “Your ‘twoness’ has ceased to exist.”

Are you so locked together that there is nothing in this life that can separate you?
