Do you cover up your sins or confess them

“He who conceals his sins will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will find mercy.” ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭28‬:‭13‬

It is our nature to hide our sins and cover them up, but it is far better to confess our sins to the LORD God, forsake them, and partake of His mercy and forgiveness in Christ Jesus, our Savior. The Bible teaches us, “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness” because of Jesus Christ and His atoning sacrifice on the cross for the sins of all (1 John 1:8-9; cf. 2:1-2; Psalm 32).

I have sinned against You, O God, and am worthy of Your wrath and punishment. Forgive my sins, cleanse my heart, and lead me in Your ways for the sake of Messiah Jesus, Your Son, and my only Savior. Amen.

Are you born of the Spirit?

“That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.“ John 3:6-7

It is not enough to be born of the flesh — a birth resulting from the union of a man and woman. To be a part of God’s kingdom, one must be born again of God — of the gracious working of God’s Spirit through God’s saving Word and Baptism.

Thank You, O Holy Spirit, for raising me up from spiritual death to spiritual life through “the washing of water by the word” (Eph. 5:26). Amen.

Are you ready to pray this prayer?

“Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: and see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” Psalm 139:23-24

Are you ready to pray this prayer — to ask God, who knows and sees all, to search and test your heart and reveal any wicked way in you? Are you ready for Him to lead you in the way everlasting by moving you to repent of your sins and look to Christ and His cross for pardon and forgiveness? Are you ready to seek the guidance and direction of God’s Word in your life?

Lead me, O God, to see and repent of my sins and trust in Christ’s holy life and innocent sufferings and death for pardon and forgiveness. “Lead me in the way everlasting.” Amen.

Wise as serpents, harmless as doves

“Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues; and ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles.” Matthew 10:16-18

When Jesus chose the 12 apostles and sent them out to preach the gospel of the kingdom, He told them He was sending them out as sheep amid wolves, meaning they would encounter opposition and persecution — being delivered up to councils and scourged in synagogues. Jesus told them to exercise the wisdom of serpents but to be harmless as doves — to avoid unnecessary exposure to such persecution but, at the same time, to be as innocent and harmless as doves. Today, too, those who follow Jesus and share His Word will encounter persecution from the world and from erring churches and their leaders. Believers are to be wise and not seek to stir up opposition and persecution, but to be honest and faultless in presenting the truth.

Give me wisdom, O God, to avoid needless confrontation with the world and erring churches, but keep me faithful and uncompromising in my witness to the truth of Your Word, calling upon all to repent of their sinful and erring ways and to look to Jesus and His cross in faith for pardon and forgiveness. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

The way of the ungodly leads to eternal death

Therefore, the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the LORD knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the ungodly shall perish. Psalm 1:5-6

Those who remain impenitent and continue in their sinful and rebellious ways will not stand in God’s judgment or be counted members of Christ’s Church. Instead, they will be condemned to the eternal fires of hell. But the LORD knows the way of those who are sorry for their sins and trust in Christ Jesus and will give them eternal life in His presence.

Grant that I acknowledge and repent of my sins, O LORD, and look to Christ Jesus and His cross for mercy and forgiveness that I may stand uncondemned in Your presence. Amen.
