Made from dust of the ground

“And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” Genesis 2:7

The LORD God formed Adam’s body from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and Adam became a living soul, alive physically, with a living, breathing body, and spiritually, knowing God and His will, and loving, trusting, and honoring God, his Maker. John’s Gospel tells us of Jesus, God’s Son, that “all things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men” (John 1:3-4). It was Jesus who breathed into Adam’s nostrils the breath of life.

We thank You, dear Lord Jesus, for both creating us and giving us life, and for redeeming us by giving Your life in our stead when You died on the cross to atone for our sins. Amen.

Forgiveness and life through faith in Jesus

“He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.” John 3:36

The Apostle John here summarizes the core message of the Bible: The one who places His faith in Jesus Christ, the Son of God who was lifted up on the cross as a sacrifice for the sins of the world (cf. John 1:29; 3:14-18), is forgiven and has eternal life. The one who does not trust in Jesus Christ is not pardoned and forgiven and will not see eternal life; “the wrath of God abides on him”!

Dear Lord Jesus, grant that I trust in You and Your cross that I might be pardoned and forgiven and have eternal life and not remain under God’s wrath and condemnation for my sins. Amen.

Dead to sin, alive to God

“And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” Galatians 5:24-25

When, by the working of God’s Spirit through the Word, we repent of our sinful ways and place our faith in Christ Jesus and His cross, we trust that all our sinful affections and desires were crucified on the cross of Christ and that He paid the full penalty for all our sins. Since it is by the Spirit of God that we are now alive to God through faith in Christ, we also live our lives in the strength of the Holy Spirit and according to His leading, putting to death the desires of the flesh and living our lives in accord with the counsel of God’s Spirit in the Word.

O gracious Holy Spirit, grant that I regard myself dead to sin but alive to God through faith in Christ Jesus, my Savior, and walk in accord with the counsel of Your Word and not in accord with my own sinful passions and desires. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Those who spread false teaching will be judged

“I have confidence in you, in the Lord, that you will have no other mind; but he who troubles you shall bear his judgment, whoever he is. And I, brethren, if I still preach circumcision, why do I still suffer persecution? Then the offense of the cross has ceased. I could wish that those who trouble you would even cut themselves off!” Galatians 5:10-12

Those who cause others to err or fall from the true faith by spreading teachings and beliefs that do not agree with the revealed Word of God will be judged by the LORD God and held accountable for misleading souls redeemed by the blood of Christ Jesus. Indeed, it would be better for those urging circumcision and righteousness based on the law to emasculate themselves than to weaken or destroy the faith of believers!

Keep me from error and false teaching, O Lord, and preserve me in the true and saving faith in Christ Jesus. In His name, I pray. Amen.

'Speak not in the ears of a fool'

“Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.” Proverbs 23:9

While we are called upon to urge all to repent of their sinful ways and believe the gospel of forgiveness and life through faith in Jesus Christ, it is of little use trying to convince a person who continually despises and rejects the wisdom of God’s Word. To waste time arguing with a fool can prove foolish on our part (cf. Prov. 26:4).

Grant that we faithfully bear witness to the truth revealed in Your Word, O Lord, but keep us from the folly of arguing with fools who despise the wisdom of Your Word. Amen.
