God works all things for good of those called

“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28

Though often hidden from our eyes in this life, God is, in all things, working for the eternal welfare of those called to faith in His Son, Jesus Christ, through the Gospel, those who, as a fruit of their faith in Christ, love God.

Grant me faith, O God, to believe that You are working for my good in all things, for Jesus’ sake. Amen.

'Unite my heart to fear thy name'

“Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name.” Psalm 86:11

Apart from the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit, each of our hearts was united in the service of sin — we sought to go our own selfish ways. Having been brought to faith in Christ, we now have a new nature that loves God and desires to walk in accord with the truth of His Word but, in this life, we still have our old corrupt sinful nature. With the psalmist, we pray that God would unite our divided hearts to honor the name of our God and Savior in all we think, say, and do.

Unite my heart, O God, to love You, trust in You and honor You in all I think and do. I ask this for the sake of Jesus, my Savior. Amen.

Present yourselves to God, not to sin

"Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. Do not yield your members to sin as instruments of unrighteousness, but yield yourselves to God, as those who are alive from the dead, and your bodies to God as instruments of righteousness." Romans 6:12-13

Since we who believe and have been baptized are joined to Christ in His death — in full payment for our sins — and in His resurrection — that we might be alive to God — we are urged to present our bodies to God as being alive from the dead rather than to our old sinful passions which lead back into death.

Grant that I live for You, O God, as one joined to Christ in baptism, dead to sin but raised up to live for You. Amen.
