Today is the 159th Anniversary of the Battle of Antietam (Sharpsburg). On 17 September 1862 the Union Army of the Potomac met the Army of Northern Virginia in what remains to this day, the most fiercely fought battle in American history. General Lee positioned his army behind Antietam Creek near the town of Sharpsburg, MD. The battle is often thought of as three battles fought on the same day. The first was on in the vicinity of the Dunker Church and the Cornfield. The second fight was in the center of the battlefield in the vicinity of the Sunken Road (Bloody Lane). The third fight was in the vicinity of what is now known as Burnside's Bridge. The battle culminated with a fierce counter attack.

Here is a cautionary tale. This little dog was euthanized today. To the people he came into contact with he represented either a profit, or something to be abused, or an inconvenience and liability. He was two years old and no one cared about this dog. He never stood a chance.

But he is not the only one. He was a Prapso (Lhasa Apso). Today there are 79 Lhasa's on Pet Finder. There are hundreds of other dogs and cats available for adoption, including Lhasa's and other breeds. Most of them are not perfect. Some have been abused, some are older and have been abandoned, some have health problems. But all of them need a home. And someone to care.

If you have lost a dog or cat or consider getting a pet, I urge you to go to the local shelter near you and rescue one. You or someone you know may have the opportunity to ensure that some other dog or cat doesn't end up like this poor little fellow.
