GREAT EXPECTATIONS: TO BE, OR NOT TO BE

Are expectations a key to successful achievement, or a setup for disappointment and disaster?

Expectation implies certainty and is future-based. Expectations are what we BELIEVE will happen. Reality is what then actually occurs. A significant source of stress and unhappiness occurs for people when their idealized expectations do not occur in as favorable and satisfying a way as they imagined they would.

Many people and many philosophies advise that it is better to live free of expectations, and instead live in the possibilities of the present. "Life delivers far less disappointment when your expectations are low."

Is having expectations inherently damaging and harmful, and something to be avoided?

According to author and actor Steward Stafford, "Psychatrists say unrealistic expectations lead to depression, but why else are we alive if not to dream? Every expectation is unrealistic until it is made a spectacular reality through inspiration, hard work, and persistence."

"Most people don't lead their own lives - they simply accept the limited life that is handed to them by others."

WHEN OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS, HOW WILL YOU ANSWER?

We live every day surrounded by a sea of endless opportunity.

In spite of this most people regardless of circumstance will bemoan "never having had a chance."

Opportunity is "a favorable or advantageous circumstance which provides an opening for you to progress or advance forward toward the attainment of your goal," - whatever it is.

The Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon describes how things you are focused on suddenly seem to crop up and appear everywhere. This is the science behind what is known as the Law of Attraction and the popular notion of "manifestation," and is key to your experience of opportunity.

DO THE JOB - CARRYING THE MESSAGE TO GARCIA

"The hero is the man who does the job, who carries the message to Garcia..."

"We have recently been hearing much maudlin sympathy expressed for the “downtrodden denizens of the sweatshop” and the “homeless wanderer searching for honest employment,” and with it all often go many hard words for those from whom "a living wage" is being demanded.

Nothing is said about the employer who grows old before his time in a vain attempt to get frowsy ne’er-do-wells to do intelligent work; and his long patient striving after “help” that does nothing but loaf when his back is turned.

In every store and factory there is a constant weeding-out process going on. The employer is constantly sending away “help” that have shown their incapacity to further the interests of the business, and others are being taken on.

No matter how good times are, this sorting continues: only if times are hard and work is scarce, the sorting is done finer – but out and forever out the incompetent and unworthy go.

It is survival of the fittest. Self-interest prompts every employer to keep the best – and those who can carry a message to Garcia.

I know one man of really brilliant parts who has not the ability to manage a business of his own, and yet who is absolutely worthless to anyone else because he carries with him constantly the insane suspicion that his employer is oppressing, or intends to oppress, him.

He cannot give orders, and he will not receive them. Should a message be given him to take to Garcia, his answer would probably be, “Take it yourself!”

Tonight this man walks the streets looking for work, the wind whistling through his threadbare coat. No one who knows him dares to employ him, for he is a regular firebrand of discontent. He is impervious to reason, and the only thing that can impress him is the toe of a thick-soled Number Nine boot." (Read more below…)

Human beings are inherently social animals. That is to say, part of our humanity is our drive to seek the companionship of others, including building and maintaining intimate or close social relationships with them.

With few exceptions, we do not thrive in isolation. Nearly everything we do involves interaction with others.
