There are so many lessons to learn from this.
1. If you have no way to defend yourself against an oppressive and violent government then you are subject to their whim. We have the 2nd amendment that makes it a right to have the weapons that the government has so that we as citizens have the means to defend our selves against an oppressive regime.
2. Socialism does not work in any way, in any flavor, in any form.
3. If you sacrifice any of your rights for perceived security then you deserve neither.
4. Once you give up your rights nothing but large quantities of blood and sacrifice will gain them back.
There will be more horror in Venezuela, be glad that you do not live there and will be called on to sacrifice and bleed.

While I believe that all of these people are controversial I do not agree with banning them from public discourse. It is important for us to debate the merits of their arguments and be able to recognize BS when we hear it.
