Today is so surreal for me! It was fifty-six years ago, to this very day, that I was hit by a car. Just like today, it was a Saturday. I laid battered, broken and lifeless in the middle of the road for well over ten minutes while a group of Christians gathered around me praying... my mother among them... and paramedics worked to revive me.
The paramedics gave me up for dead, pulled a sheet up over my head and put their equipment away. It's at times like this, when people say there's no more we can do, that God works miracles.
As the paramedics prepared to gather up my lifeless body and take me away I sat up and screamed, the sheet falling away from my face. I passed out and did not awaken again for thirteen weeks.
Ninety-one days passed slowly. Each night, after closing down his service station, my father would come to the hospital and spend the night by my side. In the morning, he would go home, take a shower and go run his business for the day.
Finally, my eyes opened, another miracle! Little by little my senses and abilities returned, which were also miracles, except for the abilities to talk and walk. The doctors said there was too much brain damage and I would probably never talk again and that the leg was a useless appendage and would have to be removed.
God said, "Hold my holy water" and worked two more miracles.
Every word I speak is a miracle manifested. Every step I take, a miracle. Every day I'm alive is another miracle! From that first day, to this, it's been 20,455 days. How many more days I have left... God only knows. But I am so thankful for each and every day.
