John 11:35 NIV
35 Jesus wept.
Sacred Lessons Only Grief Can Teach You
Katie T. Kennedy
Grief is a complicated subject. On one hand, it's simple and easy to understand because we all experience loss. Yet, on the other hand, it’s extraordinarily complicated because grief manifests differently in all of us and our losses are unique.
When I sat down to write this article, I thought it would flow easily out of me because I have experienced quite a bit of grief in my life and spent hours in counseling processing loss. I thought putting down all the lessons grief can teach us would be straightforward.
What I realized is that everyone’s grief journey is very personal. What I observed from a loss might be the opposite of what you are feeling. When it comes to feelings of grief, so many emotions can arise.
We can also grieve over things other than death, as we learned this past year. We feel the loss from canceled trips and activities, our normal routines, changes in a job, a family we can’t see, illness, etc. The feelings associated with all the scenarios mentioned might be similar, yet each one can teach us something different and recovery times may vary.
I struggled to find a commonality between all the different scenarios because I didn’t want to discount anyone’s loss. Grief doesn’t have one size that fits all approaches to healing, nor will we all learn the same thing. Our stories and makeup are unique, and God is working in us differently, healing our individual wounds.
I’m not a counselor or an expert on grief. What I know about the subject I learned the hard way; through my own loss, visiting a counselor, reading books on the matter, and seeing what the Bible said about grief.
All that said, I believe there are a few lessons that only grief can teach us. Sometimes we can only see them when we’ve come out the other side. When you are in the valley of grief, it’s hard to see the silver lining.
Grief Teaches Us How to Relate
Encountering our own suffering helps equip us to empathize better with others.
God can use the pain we endure to help others. We can identify with them, support them, relate to them, and assist them through tough times. We might not have the perfect words, because honestly, there are no perfect words when you have just buried a loved one.
We can share authentic compassion in whatever way that might look like. It might be listening to them as they talk through their current feelings or sharing stories of their lost loved ones. Maybe you love them by bringing them a meal and letting them know you are thinking of them. It could also mean sharing a loss of your own, if appropriate, so they know you understand where they are. You can provide hope that they too will get through this.
I lost my mom to suicide when I was twenty. When I encounter people today that have also lost their mom, we immediately have a common bond. They completely understand the significance of that loss in my life, and I understand theirs.
It’s actually quite amazing how being vulnerable can quickly put you on the same page as someone.
You never know how God will use your story, and your loss in a way to help others. Even today as people grieve death, jobs, and multiple changes, you can sympathize that yes, their feelings are real, and you understand their loss. It makes people feel heard.
Grief provides an opportunity for people to connect in a unique way.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the beautiful story of Lazarus and the many lessons I can learn from this amazing passage of Scripture. Thank You that sickness, sin, death, and hell, which is the inevitable result of all who fall short of Your glory, has been conquered forever through the death, burial, and Resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ on our behalf. Thank You that just as Mary and Martha’s period of misery was turned into laughter and joy, so my night of weeping has also been turned into a morning of joy with peals of singing, through faith in Christ my Redeemer. Thank You that because He lives, I too shall live. May I sing forth Your praise and glory in the eternal ages to come. In Jesus' name, I pray, AMEN.

Comforting Psalms for When We Worry
Kirstyn Mayden
I am a Christian and I worry. I worry about the health and safety of my family, my financial well-being, and if I am truly making an impact using my God-given gifts. I also worry about the ongoing global pandemic, systematic injustices, and educational inequities that are prevalent today.
We all worry and have daily anxieties that keep us up at night, consume us, and attempt to steal our peace. However, there is good news today. God is with us when we worry. God wants to reassure and remind us that our worries do not have the final say. As we continually practice surrendering our anxieties to God, we will be able to sleep better at night and be confident that God accompanies us each step of the way.
If you are currently worrying in this season, here are five Psalms of comfort to uplift you:
God Delivers and Strengthens Us When We Worry
“Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted. Relieve the troubles of my heart and bring me out of my distress. Consider my affliction and my trouble and forgive all my sins” (Psalm 25:16-18).
In this Psalm, David cries out to the Lord for guidance and deliverance. He is weighed down with burdens and looks to God for relief. Amidst our worries, God will comfort and strengthen us, reminding us of God’s sovereignty. When we seek God with our hearts and recognize that He is with us during both good and challenging times, it helps to sustain us when we worry.
You may feel lonely, and it seems that God is distant. This Psalm affirms and reassures you that God has not forgotten about you and will uplift you during seasons of anxiety, distress, and despair. God will not dismiss our concerns but wants us to seek His presence, power, and protection. Today, I invite you to be strengthened and encouraged that God is present and able to help you overcome your worries and anxieties.
Prayer
Loving Father, You are my God and Saviour and I love and trust You with all my heart. Help me to make the right choices in my life so that in all I say and do Your name may be glorified. Teach me the way that I should go, knowing that all Your ways are good, and Your path leads to peace. Protect me from those things that would harm me and uphold me with Your gracious hand today. And in the days that lie ahead, I pray that may I never stray from the path of righteousness. This I ask in Jesus' name, AMEN.

I Choose

Secular person: I want to do X.

Christian: You’re free to do that.

Secular person: But you think X is Wrong!

Christian: Yes, I do.

Secular person: Because you want to control me!

Christian: No, you are free to do whatever you want.

Secular person: But you think X is wrong!!

Christian: Yes, because God has said it is wrong.

Secular person: But I want to do X!!!

Christian: You are free to do that if you choose to.

Secular person: But I want you to say that X is good!!!

Christian: I can’t do that.

Secular person: You’re judging me!!

Christian: I don’t have the authority to do that.

Secular person: Right, nobody does!!!!!

Christian: God does. Only he has that authority. But why do you care? If you don’t believe in God, why do you feel guilty for wanting to do X?

Secular person: I DON’T feel guilty!!! I just want you to accept me!!!

Christian: I do! In fact, I love you! But God set the standards that I live by.

Secular person: You are narrow mined and demeaning!!! I hate you and everyone like you!!!!!!

Christian: That is ok. Still your choice, I choose to love you like God did. He gave his only begotten Son so that you can be forgiven for all that you do.

Encouragement for the Overlooked
Darcie Fuqua

We were born to live in a community, riding the ups and downs together. No one likes to be overlooked; even the most introverted person residing off the grid, one sitting in sweats and reading a book, needs human connection. When others fail to notice us, it can emotionally deplete us. It can cause us to withdraw and retreat, especially when we feel the offense is intentional.

When I mentioned that I was writing this article to my husband, he looked at me wide-eyed and asked if I felt overlooked. "Do you feel overlooked by me?" he asked. My response, combined with a typical southern woman's mean mug, was, "No. It is not always about you." We've been married seventeen years, y'all. What can I say? I went on to explain that several times in my life, I've felt unseen, overlooked, or passed over in different relational areas. Some instances have seemed intentional, while others are just part of life.

The beautiful thing about life's trials is that they drive compassion deep into your blood. And although you can never step in the shoes of someone else's challenging experiences, your heart can bleed with them. You can embrace them warmly, sit with them, and listen. It gives you a different perspective, a more down-on-your-knees, humble level.

Whether you have been overlooked in friendships, relationships, sports, careers, or especially by the church, rest in the fact that you are never ignored by Jesus. Friend, I know we aren't sitting on the same couch, but consider this my giant teddy bear hug for you. I may not be able to see you, but I know the One who does, and I pray these bits of encouragement give you restored hope.

God Sees You When No One Else Does

Among the many names of God that describe His perfect character, I find El Roi to be one of the most comforting. It means "The God who sees me" (Genesis 16:13). While you may feel invisible, know that God sees you. Hagar was the woman in the Bible who attributed this name to God, and she is the only character in the Bible to name God. She was pregnant and alone in the wilderness, running from Sarah's cruelty and jealousy when the angel of the Lord visited her (Genesis 16). Friend, there is no place on earth you can ever run from God's compassionate presence.

Dear Heavenly Father,

Hagar was so worried and anxious about her life. She was a mistreated slave and all she knew to do was to run. It didn’t help her to run but it gave her a watershed moment with you. You showed her that you saw her struggle and that she could trust you to bless her without removing the struggle for her. Teach me that lesson too. It’s easy for me to get so caught up in my struggles that I forget that you’re the God who sees me. I think I must tell you what’s going on, so you’ll remember to help me. You already know everything about my life and its challenges. You are the God who sees me, and you are working everything out for my good and the blessing of others too. Since I know you see me, I will run free on this day like a boy who knows his father is at the park with him.

AMEN

I can say in truth that if I were to resign from the church and become president of the United States or Prime Minster of the British Empire, I would feel that it was a step-down. It is a God-given calling to minister to the people in God's church.
